Yunjae Kim had a very rough entrance into the world. Dropped off in front of the Social Welfare Society in Seoul, South Korea. From what he understands, his mother was from Hwacheon and had been in Seoul to go to school, got pregnant and scared, and dropped him off so she didn't end up being shamed as a single mother for the rest of their lives. He languished in the orphanage for about six months until an American couple took him home to Pittsburgh.

The parents had six other children, all from other countries, other ethnicity, and he was just one of many. He spent his first five years there, watching as children came and left, until Child Protective Services busted them for child labor and all of the children ended up filtering into the American foster system.

Yunjae, now just going by Jae, was bounced around to four different foster homes. Some were nice, one was awful, but nothing beat the way his formidable years were spent. He grew up relatively distrustful, compounded by the second family he stayed with, so when he came to Andrew and Nora Scott when he was thirteen, it took a while for him to open up, to trust that they weren't going to use or hurt him.

Eventually, his distrust eased and he blossomed. His schooling had been spotty at best, but Jae was a smart kid who easily caught up, finding that he loved school-- especially science. He also found a love of the guitar, after Andrew gifted him an acoustic one for his fourteenth birthday. He excelled, and while he was again distrustful when his parents brought another foster kid into the house, he bonded with her surprisingly quickly. They were only a few months apart in age and had gone through similar situations growing up. He quickly decided that she was definitely sister material.

When both he and Haley were sixteen, Andrew and Nora offered to adopt the both of them. Overjoyed, he accepted, sealing the trust that he had in his new family. He butted heads sometimes with Andrew and Nora's biological son Ben, but overall he got along with all of them well.

When it came time to go to college, Jae applied for as many scholarships as he could because he didn't want his parents to have to pay for him to go through college-- they'd already done so much for him, he wanted to do it on his own. When he was offered a full ride scholarship to Gardner University for sports medicine, he gleefully accepted though only realized later what he was signing on for.

After graduating with honors from Gardner University, with help from his adonus-turned-boyfriend Milo Lee, he decided to follow Milo to South Korea, knowing that the culture shock was going to be something to get used to. He wasn't quite prepared for the magnitude though.
