jin kang (father, 56, plastic surgeon), yeseul kang (mother, 54, entertainment lawyer) personality & behavior quiet: dante doesn't speak much, but that doesn't mean he has nothing to say. he is very expressive with his body language, but rarely forms words into a sentence 90% of the population can understand. observant: he is very keen, enjoying watching people and reading their body language even though he realizes it can be considered rude and a version of eavesdropping, but he finds himself doing it anyway. people watching is a favorite pastime. aggressive: dante has a sharp=edged temper that simmers under the surface. most people who picks fights with him realize quickly that he can both stand up for himself and back it up with ease. compassionate: he has a big heart despite his hard outer shell, and if he likes someone he will give them the shirt off his back. he cares deeply for the afflicted and has a deep well of love to give but he keeps it closely guarded. appearance the word that most would use to describe dante is angular. he has sharp features, high cheekbones, a hard jaw and slanted eyes, dark irises almost looking black usually. he has full lips and rarely smiles widely because his front teeth are slightly large, having earned himself the nickname of 'bunny' back in high school. his hair is black and he usually wears it long to hide both the cochlear implants and the scars left behind from the surgery. he also has long, elegant hands that he uses to communicate more often than not. he stands at 5'11", about average for a korean man, and is both thin and toned, with a rigorous workout routine rewarding him with chiseled abs beneath the baggy clothing he tends to favor. likes classic rock music, sign language, silence, a new knife set, cooking, baking, reading, going out to eat, gochujang, meatballs, food in general, WHISKEY, BEER, SOJU, COMFORTABLE CLOTHING, MUSIC IN GENERAL, LAUGHTER, FIGHTING, WEED, FREESTYLE RAP, GUM, KOREAN BANCHAN, TATTOOS AND PIERCINGS, HAIR DYE. dislikes bullies, assholes, liars, techno music, ambient noise, too much talking, the scratch of certain pencils on paper, being treated as a second class citizen because of his deafness, russian food, WINE, HAVING TO DRESS UP, PUSHY FUCKHEADS, PEOPLE STARTING FIGHTS WITH HIM, CAMEL CIGARETTES, BAD TEETH, BLAND FOOD. random facts ► HE IS VERY HIGH ENERGY AND HIGHLY EMOTIONALLY REACTIVE. dante kang was born to two second-generation korean-americans. one was a lawyer, cool and vicious and spent most of her time at work, and the other was a doctor, one of the most prestigious plastic surgeons in the san diego area. he is the oldest of three children, and his two younger siblings have always adored their parents. dante didn't feel one way or another about them until he grew up. during the summers away from school, he would be shipped up to temecula to spend the time with his cousin's family. since his cousin was always going to horse camps, dante would end up getting dragged along to those. he found that he didn't enjoy horseback riding as much as his cousin did, but it centered him and made him feel peaceful. he would take trail rides while shawn learned how to compete. it gave him an intense appreciation for the outside. spending time with his nanny while his parents worked, he found he had a passion for cooking. he would beg the nice american lady to teach him whatever she was making for dinner, and by the time he was fourteen he was making food for the family himself, though he begged his nanny to keep the secret between them. the nanny also attempted to teach him spanish, but since he had a hard enough time with english, he only grasped the very basics. his parents tried to get him into a medical or law-related field as he went into high school, but cooking remained his one true love. once college came around, he agreed to do his general ed credits at university of california irvine. once he got enough credits to transfer, he did just that to orange county school of the arts. he didn't tell his parents and had intercepted the tuition check, readdressing it to the culinary school because he'd spent most of his life forging his parents' signatures. he almost got through his entire first semester before his parents found out about what he'd done, and they abruptly cut him off. they attempted to get him kicked out of school so they could get their tuition money back, but the school of the arts refused. he was kicked out of his apartment since his parents' names were on the lease, and ended up crashing on someone's couch, someone he didn't really care much for, but it was better than sleeping on a park bench. after finding out that he was sleeping on some random dude's couch, dante's parents reached out to him and offered him a compromise: go to an ivy league college in seoul that happened to have a culinary program, and they'd pay his way for all of it. it didn't take much for him to accept. it burns him badly that he works as a bartender when he has an education as a chef, but he takes what he can get.
